SAFETY TIPS!

On the subject of safety, it’s easy to get complacent.  On a bike that can be a disaster.  If you’re going to be safe you have to pay attention full time.

You gotta rely on you to stay safe!

Look at everything.  Takes maybe 15 minutes. Remember, everything ages, and wears out, besides you!

Also, Owner’s manuals tend to have pretty good check lists and time schedules.

Maintenance reminders:

  • Change oil & filter every 5,000 miles.

  • Cooling systems should be flushed every 2 years, or every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

  • Brake fluid (DOT 4) should be bled out and replaced with new, fresh, fluid every 2 years.  (moisture accumulates).

  • Rubber lines should be replaced every couple of years.

  • Braided steel lines are never a bad idea.

  • Brake pads are easy to check on most bikes.

  • Air Cleaners should be serviced (K&N!) at least every 12,000 miles.  I do mine when I change oil.

  • Batteries have a life span.

  • Steering head bearings.

  • On bikes that have adjustable valves, (mechanical lifters) they should be checked every 12,000 - 15,000 miles.  Or less depending on the engine, as little as 6,000 to 8,000 miles.  Your owner’s manual will tell you. They tighten, and they loosen.  If they get loose there will be clatter.  If they tighten you probably won’t notice, until it’s too late!
